Entry requirements for Algeria

What British travellers need to know

You must have a visa to visit Algeria and should apply through the Algerian Consulate in the UK before you travel.

Your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive in Algeria.

If you overstay your visa, you may be detained and face criminal prosecution or up to 3 months in prison.

You may get a tourist visa on arrival at some airports if most of your travel is in southern Algeria and you have a reservation with an approved local travel agency.

If you are coming from a country with yellow fever transmission risk, you must have a certificate proving you have had a yellow fever vaccination.

Good to know:

Declare cash at entry and exit if you are carrying more than 5000 euros or its equivalent in other currencies to avoid criminal prosecution.

When buying souvenirs, get proof of authenticity for anything that looks old or antique to avoid detention for smuggling antiquities.

Safety in Algeria

Tips when travelling

Algeria is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

There is a high threat of terrorist attack, so stay aware of your surroundings at all times.

There is a risk of pickpocketing, robbery and petty theft in larger cities.

It is illegal to be under the influence of alcohol in a public place.

Do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public during the daytime in Ramadan.

Take care when driving as road traffic accident rates are very high and driving can be erratic.

Bonus tips:

If you hire a taxi, ask your hotel to phone a reputable firm and do not allow unknown passengers to join you.

You do not have to carry your passport at all times, but take it on longer journeys and you must have it for domestic air travel.
