Entry requirements for Turkey

What British travellers need to know

British citizens do not need a visa for tourist or business visits to Turkey for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Your passport must be valid for at least 150 days after the date you arrive in Turkey.

Your passport must have at least 1 blank page for entry stamps.

If entering at a land border, ensure officials stamp and date your passport at the crossing.

You can visit Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, for business or tourism.

Good to know:

When leaving Turkey with a dual British-Turkish national child aged 18 or younger, you may need to show permission to travel from the Turkish parent.

You must not take Turkish lira worth more than 5000 US dollars out of the country, and currency over this value must be declared.

Safety in Turkey

Tips when travelling

Turkey is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Be wary of strangers offering you food or drink as it could be spiked, and always keep sight of your own drinks.

Street robbery and pickpocketing are common in major tourist areas, so keep your personal belongings secure.

Sexual assaults can occur in coastal resort areas, often by people the victim met during the day or by hotel staff, so be extra vigilant.

Only use registered taxis, note the registration number before entering, and ensure the fare is metered to avoid risks.

Be careful when swimming as some beaches have strong undercurrents, hidden rocks, or shallow depths, and always obey flag warnings.

Bonus tips:

During Ramadan, avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during the daytime to avoid causing offence.

It is illegal not to carry photographic ID, so always have your passport or residence permit with you.
