Entry requirements for Argentina

What British travellers need to know

You can visit Argentina without a visa for tourism for up to 90 days.

Your passport must be valid for the proposed duration of your stay in Argentina.

Immigration authorities do not stamp passports on entry, so contact the Argentine Migration Office if you need proof of entry or exit.

To extend your stay for another 90 days, get advice from the Argentine Migration Office before your current stay ends.

You must declare cash or travellers cheques worth more than 10,000 US dollars on entry.

Good to know:

Children aged 17 and under who are resident in Argentina need written permission from the non-accompanying parent to leave the country.

There are strict customs rules, and you must declare any goods that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Safety in Argentina

Tips when travelling

Argentina is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Watch your belongings closely on public transport and at terminals, and do not hang bags on chair backs.

In crowded areas like Buenos Aires, be aware of thieves using distraction techniques such as the 'mustard scam' to steal your possessions.

Avoid wearing expensive jewellery or clothing in public, especially at night, to reduce the risk of robbery or opportunistic kidnapping.

Never leave your drink unattended in bars and do not accept drinks or food from strangers to avoid spiking and the risk of robbery or assault.

When driving, always keep your car windows closed and doors locked, especially in major cities, due to vehicle crime.

Bonus tips:

Book taxis in advance or only hail a taxi with a visible 'radio taxi' logo on the door for your safety.

If you rent a car, you must have both the 1949 version of an international driving permit and your UK driving licence with you inside the vehicle.

No vaccinations required

Consult your doctor regarding recommended vaccinations and health precautions before travelling to Argentina. Ensure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines. Dengue fever and other mosquito-borne diseases are present, so take precautions against mosquito bites. Tap water is generally considered safe in major cities, but bottled water is recommended for those with sensitive stomachs or when traveling to rural areas.

Cards & payments

Card payments are widely accepted in larger establishments in cities, but smaller businesses and rural areas may prefer cash.
