Safety in Argentina

Tips for British travellers

Argentina is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Thieves and pickpockets operate on public transport, so always keep a close eye on your personal possessions.

To avoid theft, carry cash in a money belt under your clothes and do not hang bags on the back of seats.

Drinks and food can be spiked, so do not leave drinks unattended and do not accept food or drink from strangers.

Avoid wearing expensive clothing or jewellery in public, especially at night, to reduce your risk of crime.

When hailing a taxi, only use an official 'radio taxi' with a visible logo on the car doors.

Bonus tips:

Thefts from unattended vehicles, especially hire cars, are common, so keep car windows closed and doors locked in cities.

Be vigilant in common tourist areas like Palermo, San Telmo, and La Boca where theft is particularly frequent.

Driving in Argentina

A UK driving license is valid for tourist visits, but an International Driving Permit (IDP) is recommended.
