Safety in Armenia
Tips for British travellers
Armenia is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Leave spare cash, passports, and valuables in a safe place and carry a copy of your passport photo page instead of the original.
Be cautious when using ATMs, check for onlookers, and take extra care after dark.
Possession or use of illegal drugs like cannabis can result in heavy fines and long jail sentences, even for medical purposes.
It is illegal to photograph military bases or installations, and you could be detained for attempting to do so.
Be aware that driving standards are poor, roads are in bad condition, and it's best to avoid driving outside cities at night.
Bonus tips:
Avoid drinking to excess as it can lead to arrest for disorderly behaviour, especially in the late evening and at night.
Use the GG taxi app for reputable service rather than hailing taxis on the street to avoid scams and harassment.
Driving in Armenia
A UK driving license is valid for driving in Armenia for up to six months. After this period, an international driving permit or Armenian driving license is required.
