Entry requirements for Azerbaijan

What British travellers need to know

You must have a visa to visit Azerbaijan, which you can apply for online from the ASAN Visa service at least 3 days in advance.

Your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive and at least 2 blank pages for entry stamps.

An e-visa normally allows a single entry visit of up to 30 days within a 90-day period of validity, and you must print it to show on arrival.

If you are staying in Azerbaijan for longer than 15 days, you must register online or in person with the State Migration Service.

You can extend your 30-day stay by applying to the State Migration Service at least 3 days before the end of your permitted stay.

Good to know:

To export antiques or art like carpets from Azerbaijan, you need an export certificate which your vendor can provide or which is available from the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum.

If you use a local SIM card for more than 30 days, you must register it and pay a fee at a local post office, providing your phone's IMEI number.

Safety in Azerbaijan

Tips when travelling

Azerbaijan is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Always carry your passport with you as police often check identity documents.

Be alert to bag-snatching or mugging, especially after dark in central Baku or if you are carrying valuables.

Smoking is restricted to designated areas and you can be fined for dropping cigarette-related litter.

Possession or use of illegal drugs, including cannabis, carries severe penalties including long jail sentences and heavy fines.

If you plan to drive, ensure you have the correct international driving permit and do not use a right-hand-drive car, as it is illegal.

Bonus tips:

If you have to hire a taxi, agree on the fare upfront or ensure the meter is running to avoid severe overcharging.

Avoid driving at night as many roads are of poor quality, badly lit, and have unmarked closures or diversions.

Health in Azerbaijan

As a British tourist, ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, including repatriation, before travelling to Azerbaijan. While a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) might be useful in some European countries, they are not applicable in Azerbaijan. Check your policy details carefully and ensure it covers all planned activities.

No vaccinations required

Consult your doctor well in advance of your trip to discuss necessary vaccinations and health precautions. Ensure you have adequate travel insurance. Drink bottled water to avoid stomach issues. Be aware of the risk of tick-borne encephalitis in forested areas.

Cards & payments

Cards are accepted in many establishments in Baku, especially hotels, restaurants, and larger shops. However, it's advisable to carry cash, particularly when traveling outside of the capital.
