Safety in Bangladesh

Tips for British travellers

Bangladesh is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Be alert when using your phone in public and avoid carrying large amounts of cash or expensive jewellery.

There is a risk of sexual assault, so avoid isolated areas when alone, especially at night.

Alcoholic drinks from unlicensed sources can contain deadly methanol, so drink only in licensed venues with a permit if needed.

To avoid scams and theft at airports, do not use touts for your bags and arrange taxis in advance.

Dress modestly, with women covering shoulders and legs in public, to respect local customs and avoid offence.

Bonus tips:

Driving at night is dangerous due to poor standards and a risk of robbery, so avoid it if possible.

Travelling by bus carries risks of poor safety and crime, so avoid going alone or at night.
