Entry requirements for Bosnia and Herzegovina

What British travellers need to know

Your passport must have an 'issue date' less than 10 years before you arrive and an 'expiry date' at least 90 days after you plan to leave.

You can travel without a visa for up to 90 days within a 6-month period for tourism or short visits.

Make sure your passport is stamped on entry and exit, as border guards will check you have not overstayed the 90-day limit.

If you want to stay longer than 90 days within 6 months, you must apply for a residence permit and provide a UK criminal records document.

For a longer stay requiring a residence permit, you must obtain a UK criminal records document before you travel.

Good to know:

All foreign nationals must register with the police within 72 hours of arrival, which hotels usually handle.

Children aged 17 and under travelling with someone other than both parents must carry a notarised letter of permission signed by a parent or guardian.

Safety in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Tips when travelling

Bosnia and Herzegovina is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Beware of pickpockets and bag-snatchers in tourist areas and on public transport, particularly in Sarajevo.

Do not step off roads and paved areas in rural or less populated areas due to the risk of old landmines.

Always carry your passport or an official photo ID with you, as you may need to show it.

If you are involved in a road accident, stay at the scene and do not move your vehicle until the police arrive.

From November to April, ensure your car tyres have the correct winter marks and carry snow chains.

Bonus tips:

Taxi drivers at Sarajevo airport may try to charge a fixed price; agree on the fare before setting off.

Make sure cigarette ends are properly extinguished and only light fires in designated areas to avoid wildfires.
