Safety in Cambodia
Tips for British travellers
Cambodia is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Be alert to bag snatchings by thieves on motorbikes, especially at night in tourist areas of Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville.
Use a hotel safe for valuables and carry bags on the side away from the road to reduce the risk of theft.
Be wary of drink spiking in bars and never leave your drink unattended.
Avoid drinking spirits that could contain methanol, which can be fatal even in small amounts.
Always wear a helmet when riding a motorcycle to avoid on-the-spot fines and to ensure your insurance remains valid.
Bonus tips:
Carry a copy of your passport photo page as it may be useful for identification.
Dress respectfully by covering your shoulders and wearing skirts or shorts below the knee when visiting religious sites like Angkor Wat.
