Entry requirements for Cape Verde

What British travellers need to know

You can enter Cape Verde as a visitor for up to 30 days without a visa.

You must fill in and pay for a traveller entry form at least 5 days before you arrive.

Children aged one and under do not need to fill in the traveller entry form.

To return to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport.

Good to know:

Children aged 17 and under travelling without a parent must carry a certified letter of authorisation in Portuguese.

You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty when entering Cape Verde.

Safety in Cape Verde

Tips when travelling

Cape Verde is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Be aware of pickpocketing and bag snatching, especially in Praia and on the islands of Sal and Boa Vista.

Avoid unlit and isolated areas after dark and avoid beaches with limited or restricted visibility.

There are severe penalties including fines and long prison sentences for possessing, using or trafficking drugs.

Always use beaches where there is a lifeguard on duty and respect the warning flags for swimming.

It is a legal requirement to wear a crash helmet when riding a scooter or quad bike to avoid invalidating your insurance.

Bonus tips:

If you hire a car, scooter or quad bike, ensure it is in good condition and fully insured, as hire companies often have stricter requirements.

Only hire authorised taxis, such as the blue and yellow taxis on Sal and Boa Vista, from ranks or by asking your hotel to call one.
