Entry requirements for Chile

What British travellers need to know

You can visit Chile for up to 90 days without a visa.

Your passport must be valid for the duration of your stay in Chile.

You will be given a tourist card on arrival which you must keep safe and present when you leave the country.

British-Chilean dual nationals must enter and leave Chile using their Chilean passport.

You must declare any goods that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty when entering Chile.

Good to know:

Parents travelling with children for tourism must carry a written notarised authorisation from the non-travelling parent(s) and an original birth certificate.

To enter Rapa Nui (Easter Island), you must complete a Rapa Nui entry form, show a return ticket, and show a reservation registered with SERNATUR or an invitation letter.

Safety in Chile

Tips when travelling

Chile is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Pickpocketing, mugging and thefts from vehicles are very common throughout Chile, including inside airports, churches, hotels and bus stations.

Book taxis in advance from official booths inside the airport before exiting to avoid being scammed for large amounts of money.

Keep your valuables and passport in a hotel safe, and be wary of bags hanging on chairs or phones on tables, as thieves often use distraction techniques.

Do not resist any attempted mugging, especially if weapons are involved.

Do not drink alcohol in public places such as streets, squares, or promenades as it is illegal.

Bonus tips:

Always carry a printed copy of the photo page of your passport with you for identification.

People have been given spiked drinks in nightclubs and bars, particularly in the Suecia and Bellavista areas of Santiago, so keep your drinks in sight.
