Safety in Croatia

Tips for British travellers

Croatia is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Pickpockets operate in tourist areas, so avoid carrying large sums of cash and use hotel safes for valuables.

You can get on-the-spot fines for drinking alcohol, sleeping, or walking shirtless in swimwear in town centres.

Drink-driving is a serious offence with a lower alcohol limit than the UK, and it is zero for drivers under 24.

If you are in charge of a boat, do not drink alcohol as there are heavy penalties for being caught drunk in charge.

It is illegal to light barbecues or outdoor fires from June to October, except in designated areas, to avoid wildfires.

Bonus tips:

Always carry your passport or a copy of its photo page with you.

The police can fine you up to 4000 euros for public disturbances like fighting, shouting, or drunken behaviour.

Driving in Croatia

A UK driving license is valid in Croatia. An International Driving Permit is not required for short stays.
