Entry requirements for Denmark

What British travellers need to know

You do not need a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period in Denmark.

Your passport must have an 'expiry date' at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area.

Your passport must have a 'date of issue' less than 10 years before your arrival date.

At border control, you may need to show a return or onward ticket and prove you have enough money for your stay.

Be prepared at the border for extra time as the new Entry/Exit System (EES) may require biometric registration like fingerprints or a photo.

Good to know:

Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 10,000 euros or more to avoid seizure when leaving.

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into Denmark, with some exceptions like baby food.

Safety in Denmark

Tips when travelling

Denmark is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Pickpockets and bag-snatchers operate in crowded tourist areas like Copenhagen's main shopping street and central station.

Thieves use distraction techniques, particularly on crowded public transport and in places like hotel lobbies and cafes.

It is illegal to wear clothing that conceals your face in a public place, and you could face a fine.

Even small quantities of illegal drugs like cannabis are strictly prohibited and carry severe penalties including long jail sentences.

If you hire and use an electric scooter under the influence of alcohol, you could be prosecuted for drink-driving and fined.

Bonus tips:

Cyclists often have the right of way, so always check cycle lanes before turning right.

Take extra care in areas like Christiania and Nørrebro late at night due to instances of gang violence.
