Safety in Dominica
Tips for British travellers
Dominica is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Avoid isolated areas and beaches after dark, as there is a risk of crime.
Only use licensed taxis which have a 'Nature Island’s Standard of Excellence' windscreen sticker and agree the fare beforehand.
Never carry or wear camouflage clothing, as it is illegal for anyone including children.
Take care when swimming as currents can be strong and many beaches lack lifeguards or warning flags.
Do not carry anything through customs for anyone else, as there are severe penalties for drug offences.
Bonus tips:
When driving, keep your car doors locked and do not stop if pedestrians try to flag down your vehicle.
The main highway from Douglas Charles Airport is prone to landslides; avoid driving on this road at night.
