Entry requirements for Finland

What British travellers need to know

You can stay in Finland without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism.

Your passport must have a date of issue less than 10 years before you arrive and be valid for at least 3 months after you plan to leave the Schengen area.

You may need to show proof of accommodation, a return or onward ticket, and proof you have enough money for your stay at border control.

Be prepared to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo, at the border when entering or exiting the Schengen area.

When returning to the UK, you must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement.

Good to know:

Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 10,000 euros or more when you enter or leave.

To enter Finland with an adult who is not a parent or legal guardian, minor children must carry a letter of consent from a parent or legal guardian.

Safety in Finland

Tips when travelling

Finland is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Pickpockets may target tourists in crowded areas, so keep your personal belongings, passports and money safe.

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, are prohibited and can result in long jail sentences and heavy fines.

The drink-drive limit in Finland is significantly lower than in England, and drink-driving is a serious offence that could lead to prison.

You need a UK driving licence to drive in Finland, and hire car companies often require extra conditions like a minimum age or an international driving permit.

You may be able to use your UK Blue Badge in some circumstances, but you should check local parking rules.

Bonus tips:

Be aware of your surroundings at all times as terrorist attacks cannot be ruled out and could occur in places visited by foreign nationals.

Emergency medical assistance and search and rescue are limited in very remote Arctic areas of Finland.

UK residents can use their UK-issued Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for state healthcare in Finland. However, these cards may not cover all costs, so travel insurance is still recommended.

No vaccinations required

Generally, Finland has high standards of public health. No specific vaccinations are required for entry, but it's always wise to ensure your routine vaccinations are up-to-date. Tap water is safe to drink throughout Finland.

Cards & payments

Cards are widely accepted in Finland, especially in larger establishments and cities. However, it's always a good idea to carry some cash for smaller establishments or rural areas.
