Tipping in Indonesia

Tipping is not as widespread or expected in Indonesia as it is in some Western countries, but it is becoming more common, especially in tourist areas and for good service.

Restaurant

5-10% for good service, or round up the bill. Some restaurants may already include a service charge (usually 10%) on the bill, so check before tipping.

Bar/Café

Round up the bill or leave a small tip (e.g., IDR 5,000 - 10,000) for good service.

Taxi

Round up the fare to the nearest IDR 5,000 or 10,000. For longer rides or excellent service, you can add a bit more.

Hotel Porter

IDR 10,000 - 20,000 per bag, depending on the hotel.

Hotel Housekeeper

IDR 10,000 - 20,000 per day, left in the room.

Tour Guide

IDR 50,000 - 100,000 per day, depending on the length and quality of the tour.

Safety in Indonesia

Tips for British travellers

Indonesia is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Be alert in tourist areas like beach resorts, hotels, bars, and markets as these are potential terrorist targets, especially around holidays like Christmas, Easter, and Ramadan.

Reported cases of sexual assault and drink spiking linked to assault are high in Bali, Lombok, and the Gili Islands, so watch your drink and avoid poorly lit areas at night.

Use only registered taxi companies like Bluebird and check the driver's identity, as sexual assaults have occurred after using unregistered drivers.

Do not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum in public during daylight hours in the holy month of Ramadan, which runs from 19 February to 20 March 2026.

Methanol poisoning from alcoholic drinks, including in licensed bars, has caused deaths, so seek urgent medical help if you show symptoms after drinking.

Bonus tips:

Always carry your passport or stay permit, as it is a legal requirement.

Be very careful with alcoholic drinks as they can be stronger than in the UK, and excessive drinking has led to accidents, robbery, and assaults.

Since Brexit, the EU roaming regulations no longer apply. Check with your UK mobile provider about roaming charges in Indonesia. Roaming can be expensive, so consider purchasing a local SIM card for more affordable data and calls.

Health & vaccinations in Indonesia

Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, including emergency evacuation. Medical facilities in Indonesia can vary in quality, and private hospitals in major cities are generally better equipped. Ensure your insurance covers treatment in these facilities.

Hepatitis A

Consult your doctor or a travel clinic well in advance of your trip to discuss necessary vaccinations and health precautions.
