Entry requirements for Indonesia

What British travellers need to know

You must have a visa to visit Indonesia, which can be a 30-day visa on arrival for tourism purposes.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your arrival date and have at least 2 blank pages.

A visa on arrival costs 500,000 Indonesian rupiah, is for single entry only, and requires a return or onward ticket.

The 30-day visa can be extended once for another 30 days, but you must apply before the initial visa expires to avoid a fine.

You must complete the online customs and health declaration via the All Indonesia arrival card within 72 hours of your arrival.

Good to know:

If you are staying in private accommodation, you must register with the local police or face a 5 million rupiah fine.

All foreign tourists arriving in Bali must pay a tourist levy of 150,000 Indonesian rupiah, which can be paid online or on arrival.

Safety in Indonesia

Tips when travelling

Indonesia is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Always carry your passport or stay permit with you.

Avoid street food and only drink bottled water to reduce health risks.

Be aware of drink spiking in bars and clubs, particularly in Bali and Lombok.

Only use licensed, registered taxis and verify the driver's identity before getting in.

Watch out for bag-snatching and pickpocketing in busy tourist areas and on public transport.

Bonus tips:

Agree on all fees in advance when using services like tattoo parlours or spas.

Check the credentials and safety equipment of dive operators before scuba diving.

Health in Indonesia

Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, including emergency evacuation. Medical facilities in Indonesia can vary in quality, and private hospitals in major cities are generally better equipped. Ensure your insurance covers treatment in these facilities.

No vaccinations required

Consult your doctor or a travel clinic well in advance of your trip to discuss necessary vaccinations and health precautions. Dengue fever and malaria are risks in some areas, so take mosquito bite prevention measures. Tap water is not safe to drink; use bottled water for drinking and brushing your teeth.

Cards & payments

Card acceptance is moderate in tourist areas and larger establishments, but cash is still preferred in many places, especially smaller shops, local restaurants, and markets.

Tipping in Indonesia

Tipping is not as widespread or expected in Indonesia as it is in some Western countries, but it is becoming more common, especially in tourist areas and for good service.

Restaurant

5-10% for good service, or round up the bill. Some restaurants may already include a service charge (usually 10%) on the bill, so check before tipping.

Bar/Café

Round up the bill or leave a small tip (e.g., IDR 5,000 - 10,000) for good service.

Taxi

Round up the fare to the nearest IDR 5,000 or 10,000. For longer rides or excellent service, you can add a bit more.

Hotel Porter

IDR 10,000 - 20,000 per bag, depending on the hotel.

Hotel Housekeeper

IDR 10,000 - 20,000 per day, left in the room.

Tour Guide

IDR 50,000 - 100,000 per day, depending on the length and quality of the tour.

Mobile & roaming

Since Brexit, the EU roaming regulations no longer apply. Check with your UK mobile provider about roaming charges in Indonesia. Roaming can be expensive, so consider purchasing a local SIM card for more affordable data and calls.
