Entry requirements for Lesotho
What British travellers need to know
You can visit Lesotho for up to 90 days without a visa.
Your passport must have an expiry date at least 90 days after your arrival date.
Your passport needs at least 4 blank pages for stamping by both Lesotho and South African border control.
All visitors to Lesotho must travel through South Africa and meet South Africa's entry requirements.
Make sure you get your passport stamped by border control.
Good to know:
Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 25,000 Lesotho loti or more when entering or leaving.
You can extend your stay by completing a 90-day temporary permit extension form at the Visa Application Centre in Maseru.
Safety in Lesotho
Tips when travelling
Lesotho is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Do not walk alone in isolated areas or after dark as muggers target foreign nationals.
If driving, do not stop for people flagging you down or give lifts to strangers to avoid armed carjackers.
Always carry a copy of your passport's photo page and entry stamp as officials may ask to see these.
Keep car doors locked, windows shut, and valuables out of sight to prevent opportunistic vehicle crime.
Be aware that animals roaming on roads are a hazard, especially at night, due to poor road conditions.
Bonus tips:
Avoid using local minibus taxis as they are often poorly maintained, uninsured, and ignore road safety rules.
Driving standards and road conditions are poor, so you should drive with caution at all times.

Health in Lesotho
Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, including repatriation, as medical facilities in Lesotho may be limited. Check that your policy includes cover for adventure activities if you plan to undertake them.
Consult your doctor or a travel clinic for the most up-to-date health advice and to ensure you receive any necessary vaccinations or preventative medications. Lesotho is a high-altitude country, so be aware of altitude sickness. There is a risk of malaria in some areas, particularly during the rainy season (October to May). HIV/AIDS is prevalent; take appropriate precautions. No GHIC/EHIC equivalence exists; travel insurance is essential.
