Entry requirements for Liechtenstein

What British travellers need to know

You can travel without a visa to Liechtenstein for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism.

Your passport must have a date of issue less than 10 years before you arrive.

Your passport must have an expiry date at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area.

When you first enter the Schengen area, you may need to register your biometric details like fingerprints and a photo at a special booth.

Be prepared to allow extra time at the border for the new Entry/Exit System registration process both when entering and departing the Schengen area.

Good to know:

Children aged 11 or younger will not have their fingerprints scanned but can be required to have their photo taken during biometric registration.

Switzerland handles customs matters for Liechtenstein and there is an open border between the two countries.

Safety in Liechtenstein

Tips when travelling

Liechtenstein is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Take precautions against bag-snatching and pickpocketing, and do not leave your valuables unattended.

Do not possess, use, or smuggle illegal drugs, including cannabis, as penalties include long jail sentences and heavy fines.

If driving in winter, equip your car with winter tyres and snow-chains, and check road conditions before departure.

If using motorways in Switzerland or Austria to travel to Liechtenstein, you must buy and display a motorway vignette (sticker) to avoid a large fine.

When skiing off-piste, ensure your insurance covers mountain rescue services, helicopter costs, and repatriation or transfer to neighbouring countries for treatment.

Bonus tips:

Always leave a copy of your hiking or mountaineering itinerary with someone before you set off.

If taking part in extreme sports, ensure the company is well established and that your travel insurance covers the specific activities.
