Entry requirements for Lithuania

What British travellers need to know

Your passport must have an 'expiry date' at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area, and its 'date of issue' must be less than 10 years before your arrival date.

You can travel without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism, visiting, business, or short-term study.

At border control, you may need to show proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return ticket, and that you have enough money for your stay.

When entering the Schengen area, you may need to register your biometric details (fingerprints and a photo) at the border, which is free and may take extra time.

Visits to any Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90-day visa-free limit, so ensure your total stay does not exceed it.

Good to know:

If you are driving a private car registered in Belarus, restrictions may apply, and you should check the latest rules before travelling.

You must declare cash or travellers cheques if the total value is 10,000 euros or more when entering Lithuania.

Safety in Lithuania

Tips when travelling

Lithuania is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Petty crime like pickpocketing is common, especially on public transport and in busy locations.

Do not leave your drinks unattended or accept drinks from strangers in bars and clubs due to instances of drink spiking.

Be cautious when walking alone at night and avoid unlit streets and parks.

Never leave coats or handbags unattended in bars, pubs, and clubs.

Drink-driving is a serious offence with stricter legal limits than the UK and can lead to heavy fines and imprisonment.

Bonus tips:

Use a recognised taxi app or phone for a registered, metered taxi to avoid fare disputes.

If you have a paper driving licence, you may need to update it to a photocard or get an International Driving Permit before driving.

New Schengen Entry/Exit System (EES)

  • The Entry/Exit System (EES) is now being implemented across the Schengen area (previously said it was 'being rolled out' with full operation from 10 April 2026).
  • EES is now replacing the previous system of passport stamping for short stays (the previous text said it 'will replace' after full rollout).

Passport Validity

  • Passport validity rule: a passport with a date of issue more than 10 years ago is now explicitly stated as 'invalid for entry to the Schengen area' (previously just 'may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago').
