Entry requirements for Luxembourg

What British travellers need to know

You can travel without a visa to Luxembourg for up to 90 days in any 180-day period as a tourist.

Your passport must have a 'date of issue' less than 10 years before you arrive and an 'expiry date' at least 3 months after you plan to leave the Schengen area.

You may need to show proof of accommodation, travel insurance, a return ticket, and sufficient funds for your stay at border control.

Be prepared for the Entry/Exit System (EES) which may require you to register biometric details like fingerprints and a photo at the border for short stays.

Until the EES is fully rolled out, ensure your passport is stamped on entry and exit, or show evidence like boarding passes if a stamp is missing.

Good to know:

You must declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 10,000 euros or more when entering or leaving Luxembourg.

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into Luxembourg, with limited exceptions like baby food.

Safety in Luxembourg

Tips when travelling

Luxembourg is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Pickpockets operate on buses and in train stations, especially at Gare de Luxembourg station.

Be aware that hotel lobbies in the Findel area are reported hotspots for theft and pickpocketing.

Do not keep your passport, credit cards, and other valuables all in the same place.

The minimum legal drinking age is 16, but being drunk and disorderly in public can lead to arrest and a heavy fine.

You can use a UK photocard driving licence to drive in Luxembourg for one year.

Bonus tips:

If you have had your driving licence for less than 2 years, the legal blood alcohol limit for driving is 0.02%.

Official taxis display a price list, so check the rate per kilometre before getting in as some may charge inflated prices.
