Entry requirements for Malta

What British travellers need to know

You can travel to Malta without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism.

Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive and be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area.

At border control, you may need to show a return or onward ticket and prove you have enough money for your stay.

You will need to register your biometric details, such as fingerprints and a photo, under the new Schengen Entry/Exit System (EES) on your first visit.

Visits to other Schengen countries within the previous 180 days before you travel count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

Good to know:

You must have a certificate to prove you've had a yellow fever vaccination if you're arriving from a country listed as a transmission risk.

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into Malta, with exceptions for powdered baby milk, baby food, and special medical or pet foods.

Safety in Malta

Tips when travelling

Malta is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Be cautious of pickpocketing on crowded buses, especially between Valletta and St Julian's during summer.

Be careful in bars in the Paceville district as drink spiking has occurred, sometimes leading to forced spending or assault.

Do not keep all your valuables in one place and keep a copy of your passport somewhere safe.

Avoid smoking cannabis in public as it is illegal and attracts a fine.

Always swim within designated zones at beaches and follow the lifeguard flag system, with red flags indicating danger.

Bonus tips:

Be aware of your surroundings in rural areas during spring and autumn bird hunting seasons as hunting areas can overlap with public walkways.

Check local media for dates and times when hunting with firearms is allowed to avoid potentially hazardous areas.
