Safety in Malta
Tips when travelling
Malta is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Watch out for pickpockets on crowded buses between Valletta and St Julian's during the summer season.
In bars and clubs in Paceville, always keep your drink in sight to avoid spiking and check your bill for overcharging.
Stay with your friends and do not go off with people you do not know to reduce the risk of assault.
While swimming at beaches, understand and follow the lifeguard flag safety system, particularly avoiding red flag areas.
Smoking cannabis in public is illegal and will result in a fine, even though it can be used at home by residents.
Bonus tips:
Be aware that bird hunting with firearms is common in rural areas during spring and autumn, and hunting zones are rarely marked.
Use caution when exchanging money or using ATMs, and avoid carrying large amounts of cash.

Health in Malta
As a UK resident, you can use a Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for state healthcare in Malta. However, it's still advisable to obtain comprehensive travel insurance, as GHIC/EHIC may not cover all medical costs, including repatriation.
Generally, Malta has good healthcare facilities. No specific vaccinations are required for entry, but ensure your routine vaccinations are up to date. Tap water is generally safe to drink, but bottled water is widely available and preferred by some. Be aware of sun exposure, especially during peak summer months, and take necessary precautions.
