Safety in Malta

Tips for British travellers

Malta is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

To reduce the risk of pickpocketing, especially on buses between Valletta and St Julian's, always keep sight of your valuables.

In bars and clubs in Paceville, be careful who you buy drinks from and keep them in sight to avoid drink spiking.

Avoid splitting up from your friends and do not go with people you do not know, as there have been assaults, including sexual assaults.

In rural areas during the spring and autumn bird hunting seasons, be aware of your surroundings as hunting areas are rarely marked and can overlap with public areas.

While smoking cannabis in public is illegal and carries a fine, possessing, using, or smuggling any illegal drugs can result in a long jail sentence and heavy fines.

Bonus tips:

When driving, take care as some roads are in poor condition and local driving standards are poor.

At beaches during summer, swim only within designated zones and pay attention to lifeguard flags, as red flags indicate dangerous conditions.
