Safety in Mauritius
Tips for British travellers
Mauritius is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Keep your passport and other important documents secure in your hotel safe.
Do not walk alone at night on beaches or in poorly lit areas, especially in parts of Port Louis.
Only rent accommodation that is registered with the Mauritius Tourism Authority.
Police may ask to see your ID, so carry your passport or driving licence with you.
Drink-driving is a serious offence and you can be fined or imprisoned for having a very low level of alcohol in your system.
Bonus tips:
Do not buy anything from street or beach vendors.
Make sure any water sports operator has a valid permit and the boat has enough life jackets.
