Safety in Morocco
Tips for British travellers
Morocco is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Do not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum in public during the daytime in Ramadan, including in your car.
Drinking alcohol in the street or anywhere other than a licensed restaurant or bar is illegal and can lead to arrest.
Avoid showing affection in public, as it can cause offence, especially near religious sites or during Ramadan.
Be cautious in tourist areas and on beaches due to petty crimes like pickpocketing and bag-snatching.
Do not carry large amounts of money or valuables and avoid quiet areas, particularly after dark.
Bonus tips:
Beware of people posing as official tourist guides; only use guides with an official badge in historical districts.
Be aware that alcoholic drinks containing methanol have caused deaths and serious illness; seek urgent medical help if you show signs of poisoning after drinking.
