Entry requirements for Morocco

What British travellers need to know

You can visit Morocco without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism.

Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the date you arrive in Morocco.

Make sure the border official stamps your passport when you enter, as you may have difficulties leaving without an entry stamp.

You must have a certificate proving you've had a polio vaccine if you are arriving from a polio-affected country.

To stay longer than 90 days, you must request an extension at a Moroccan police station.

Good to know:

You can take a maximum of 2,000 Moroccan dirham into or out of the country, and must declare foreign currency worth 100,000 dirham or more.

If you arrive by private boat, you must enter at a recognised port of entry, as entry through other ports is illegal.

Safety in Morocco

Tips when travelling

Morocco is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Be vigilant against petty crimes like pickpocketing and bag-snatching, especially in tourist areas and on beaches.

Do not drink alcohol in the street as it is illegal and can lead to arrest; only drink in licensed hotels, bars, or restaurants.

Carry your passport and driving licence with you, as you will need to show identification for vehicle checks and insurance.

Avoid showing public displays of affection, as this can cause offence and may lead to complaints or prosecution.

During Ramadan, do not eat, drink, smoke, or chew gum in public during the daytime to respect local customs.

Bonus tips:

Beware of methanol in alcoholic drinks, which can cause serious illness or death, and seek urgent medical help if symptoms occur.

Only use official tourist guides with an official badge in historical districts to avoid harassment from bogus guides.

Health in Morocco

It's essential to have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, including repatriation, in case of illness or injury. A Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is not valid in Morocco.

No vaccinations required

Consult your doctor or travel clinic well in advance of your trip to discuss necessary vaccinations and health precautions. Drink bottled water and be cautious about food hygiene to avoid stomach upsets. Avoid animal bites as rabies is present. Medical facilities can be limited in rural areas.

Cards & payments

Credit and debit cards are accepted in larger hotels, restaurants, and shops in major cities. However, smaller establishments and souks (markets) often prefer cash.
