Safety in Mozambique

Tips for British travellers

Mozambique is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Street crime is common in Maputo and other cities and can involve knives or firearms.

You must always carry your passport with you as police checkpoints are common and do not accept copies.

It is illegal to drink alcohol on public beaches.

Be careful when using credit cards as Mastercard is not always accepted and US dollars or South African rand are the main exchange currencies.

Only travel by road outside major cities during daylight hours, as accidents are common due to poor roads and low driving standards.

Bonus tips:

Do not take photographs of government offices, airports, military establishments, or police without special permission.

Drink-driving is a serious offence; if found over the limit you could face a fine and possible imprisonment.

Driving in Mozambique

A UK driving license is valid for up to 6 months. An International Driving Permit is recommended.
