Safety in Mozambique

Tips when travelling

Mozambique is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

You must always carry your physical passport with you, as copies or photos are not accepted at police checkpoints.

Street crime involving knives and firearms is common in cities and tourist areas, and beaches are not policed.

It is illegal to drink alcohol on public beaches.

Police patrols are common and some officers may attempt to harass tourists or ask for bribes.

Drink-driving is a serious offence and you may face a fine or imprisonment if caught over the limit.

Bonus tips:

Keep your car doors locked and windows closed while driving to reduce the risk of carjacking.

Do not photograph government buildings, airports, or military areas without special permission.
