Entry requirements for Netherlands

What British travellers need to know

Your passport's date of issue must be less than 10 years old on the day you arrive in the Netherlands.

Your passport must have an expiry date at least 3 months after the planned day you leave the Schengen area.

You can travel without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism, visiting, or business.

When returning to the UK, you must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement if you are a British citizen.

Border officials may check your entry and exit stamps, and you should present boarding passes as evidence if a stamp is missing.

Good to know:

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into the Netherlands, with exceptions for powdered baby milk and medically required foods.

You must declare cash or travellers cheques if the total value is 10,000 euros or more on entry.

Safety in Netherlands

Tips when travelling

Netherlands is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Always carry your passport with you as you may be asked to show identification by local police.

Be very cautious if approached by someone claiming to be a plain-clothes police officer, especially if they ask for cash or credit cards.

Pickpocketing and bag-snatching are common in central Amsterdam, especially at transport hubs, so keep valuables secure and sight of your belongings.

There is a risk of drink spiking, so do not leave your drink unattended, particularly in bars and nightclubs.

Take care when walking beside canals, especially after drinking, as people often drown after falling in.

Bonus tips:

Be aware that buying or possessing drugs outside of designated cafés is illegal and can result in a prison sentence.

Watch out for cyclists and trams when crossing roads, as they have right of way and can appear suddenly.

Passport validity

  • For an older passport, if it was 'issued' more than 10 years ago before you arrive, it is now explicitly stated as 'invalid for entry to the Schengen area'.

Entry/Exit System (EES)

  • The EU's new Entry/Exit System (EES) is 'now being implemented' across the Schengen area instead of a phased rollout expected from 10 April 2026.
  • EES registration now 'may take each passenger extra time' instead of the previous 'a few minutes extra' at the border.
