Safety in Nicaragua

Tips when travelling

Nicaragua is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Keep car windows closed and doors locked while driving to reduce the risk of crime.

Use only radio-dispatched or authorised red-plate taxis and check the driver's visible ID before getting in.

Do not exchange money on the street, as you could be assaulted or targeted by muggers.

Avoid visiting markets, bus stations, the old cathedral in Managua, and poorer areas of towns after dark on foot.

Do not become involved with drugs of any kind, as possession can lead to imprisonment.

Bonus tips:

Do not use drones, as they are prohibited and you must hand them in to the authorities.

Avoid driving at night due to poor road conditions, no street lighting on main highways, and low driving standards.

No vaccinations required

It is crucial to consult your doctor or a travel clinic well in advance of your trip to discuss necessary vaccinations and health precautions. Dengue fever, Zika virus and malaria are risks in Nicaragua, so take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, such as using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and trousers, and sleeping under a mosquito net. Drink bottled or purified water to avoid stomach upsets.
