Entry requirements for Norway

What British travellers need to know

Your passport must be issued less than 10 years before the date you arrive.

Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area.

You can stay in Norway and other Schengen countries for up to 90 days in any 180-day period without a visa as a tourist.

Be prepared for your biometric details like fingerprints and a photo to be registered on your first entry into the Schengen area.

At border control you may need to show a hotel booking, travel insurance, a return ticket, and proof of sufficient money for your stay.

Good to know:

Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 25,000 Norwegian krone or more when entering Norway.

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into Norway from outside the EEA without special permission.

Safety in Norway

Tips when travelling

Norway is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

There is a small risk of petty theft, particularly at airports and railway stations in and around Oslo.

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties including long jail sentences and heavy fines.

You can use a UK photocard driving licence to drive in Norway for up to 90 days.

Drink-driving is a serious offence and you may get a fine and possible imprisonment if found with a quarter of England's legal limit.

You must keep your headlights on, but dipped, during the daytime all year round.

Bonus tips:

Police enforce bans on campfires in many hiking areas during the summer months.

If you commit a driving offence, you could get an on-the-spot fine of up to 10,000 Norwegian krone.

Health in Norway

As a UK resident, ensure you have a valid Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for state healthcare. However, these may not cover all costs, so comprehensive travel insurance is still recommended, especially for repatriation, private healthcare, and activities like winter sports.

No vaccinations required

Norway generally has high standards of public health. No specific vaccinations are required for entry. Tap water is safe to drink throughout the country. Be aware of tick-borne diseases in forested areas during summer; consider using insect repellent and checking for ticks regularly.
