Safety in Norway
Tips for British travellers
Norway is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Be aware of petty theft, particularly at airports and railway stations in and around Oslo.
Possessing or using illegal drugs, including cannabis, carries severe penalties including long jail sentences and heavy fines.
Do not drink and drive as even a quarter of the English legal alcohol limit can result in a fine and possible imprisonment.
If driving in winter conditions, you must use winter tyres with at least 3mm of tread when there is snow or ice.
You must keep your vehicle's headlights dipped and on during the daytime throughout the year.
Bonus tips:
Police enforce bans on lighting campfires in many hiking areas and during the summer months.
You must give way to traffic coming from the right on roads not marked with a priority sign.
