Entry requirements for Paraguay

What British travellers need to know

You do not need a visa to visit Paraguay.

You will normally get permission to stay for 90 days on arrival.

Your passport should be valid for the duration of your stay.

Make sure an immigration official stamps, dates, and signs your passport when you arrive to avoid a fine.

If entering at a land border, such as the crossing from Brazil, ensure your passport is stamped there and do not wait until Asunción.

Good to know:

If carrying cash or travellers cheques worth 10,000 US dollars or more, you must declare it.

You must have a yellow fever vaccination certificate if arriving from a country listed as a transmission risk.

Safety in Paraguay

Tips when travelling

Paraguay is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

You must always carry a copy of the photo page of your passport and your entry stamp as ID.

There is a zero tolerance policy for drink-driving and police can confiscate your licence on the spot if suspected.

Bag-snatching and pickpocketing are common on public transport, so keep your belongings in sight and consider using licensed taxis.

Keep away from isolated or poorly lit areas at night, including in downtown city areas.

River swimming is often dangerous due to strong currents and pollution, so check official advice before swimming in places like Lake Ypacaraí.

Bonus tips:

You might be asked to show photo ID if you pay with a credit card.

Many taxis and buses do not meet typical safety standards and often lack functioning seatbelts.

Health in Paraguay

As a British tourist, you should ensure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, repatriation, and any unforeseen circumstances. While Paraguay does not have reciprocal healthcare agreements with the UK, having adequate travel insurance will ensure you can access appropriate medical care if needed.

No vaccinations required

It's recommended to consult your GP or a travel clinic for the latest health advice before travelling to Paraguay. Ensure you are up-to-date with routine vaccinations. Mosquito-borne diseases, such as dengue fever and Zika virus and malaria, are present, so take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, such as using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and trousers, and sleeping under a mosquito net. Tap water is generally not safe to drink; stick to bottled water.

Cards & payments

Credit and debit card acceptance is growing in Paraguay, particularly in larger establishments in cities. However, it's still a good idea to carry cash, as smaller businesses and rural areas may not accept card payments.
