Safety in Romania

Tips for British travellers

Romania is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Be alert to petty theft in large towns and on public transport, especially near exchanges, hotels, stations and airports.

Be careful as drink spiking can occur in bars and clubs, so do not take drinks from strangers or leave drinks unattended.

You must carry a first aid kit, fire extinguisher, red warning triangle and a fluorescent jacket when driving.

If you drive, you must pay a road toll 'rovinieta' which you can buy at border points and most petrol stations to avoid a heavy fine.

You can be fined or imprisoned for any amount of alcohol in your system, as drink-driving is a serious offence.

Bonus tips:

Criminals have copied credit or debit cards in some bars and restaurants, so be vigilant.

You must get a report at the scene of any road accident in Romania.

Health & vaccinations in Romania

If you're a UK resident, remember to bring your UK Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). These cards allow you to access state-provided healthcare in Romania at a reduced cost or for free. However, GHIC/EHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance. It's still important to have travel insurance that covers medical expenses, repatriation, and other unforeseen events.

Vaccinations required?

No

Recommended

Consider consulting your doctor regarding recommended vaccinations for travel to Romania. Hepatitis A and Typhoid are sometimes recommended. Make sure you are up-to-date on routine vaccines.

Generally, Romania has good standards of health care, particularly in urban areas. However, it is always recommended to seek medical advice before travelling and ensure you have adequate travel insurance. Tap water is generally considered safe to drink, but bottled water is widely available and preferred by many visitors.
