Entry requirements for Russia
What British travellers need to know
You must get a visa before you travel to Russia.
Your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date your visa expires.
You must sign an immigration card at passport control every time you enter Russia and keep your half to show when you leave.
You must register with the local authorities if you are staying anywhere for more than 7 working days, and your hotel will do this automatically.
You may bring cash and travellers' cheques into or out of Russia without declaring them if their combined value does not exceed the equivalent of 10,000 US dollars.
Good to know:
You can only cross the land border between Russia and Belarus by road through a limited number of authorised crossing points.
Children under 18 years old must carry a notarised travel permission from one of their parents or legal guardians if they are travelling out of Russia without their parent or legal guardian.
Safety in Russia
Tips when travelling
Russia is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Always carry your passport as ID, as you could be fined or detained if you cannot show it during a police check.
Be alert to mugging, pickpocketing and theft in main tourist areas, airports, and on trains, and do not leave bags unattended.
Avoid unregistered taxis by using a local app or asking your hotel to call one, and always agree the fare in advance.
Even small amounts of illegal drugs like cannabis can lead to long jail sentences and heavy fines, including for transiting passengers.
Be aware of drink spiking and methanol poisoning from illicit alcohol, buy your own drinks and keep them in sight.
Photography is illegal at military, secure or official sites like airports, and you could be detained or arrested for taking pictures.
Be extremely careful what you post or share online, as you could be fined or jailed for content considered 'fake' or related to the military.
Homosexuality is not illegal but 'LGBT propaganda' is banned, and showing a rainbow flag could lead to fines, jail time, or deportation.
If travelling by overnight train, store valuables in the container under your bed or seat and do not leave your compartment empty.
