Safety in Saint Kitts and Nevis
Tips when travelling
Saint Kitts and Nevis is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Take care when walking alone off main roads and avoid isolated areas like beaches after dark.
Only use licensed taxis, which can be identified by a yellow licence plate with 'T' or 'TA' in the number.
Do not carry large amounts of cash or wear expensive-looking jewellery, and leave valuables in your hotel safe.
Be cautious when swimming, as currents can be strong and not all beaches have lifeguards or warning flags.
Agree on the fare with your taxi driver before you set off, as taxis are not metered.
Bonus tips:
It is illegal to dress in camouflage clothing, and you could face a fine or imprisonment.
You must have a local driving licence to drive, which can be obtained as a temporary licence from the Inland Revenue Department.

Health in Saint Kitts and Nevis
Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, including emergency repatriation. Check your policy's exclusions and ensure it covers all activities you plan to participate in, such as water sports or hiking.
It is recommended to consult your doctor or a travel clinic well in advance of your trip to discuss necessary vaccinations and health precautions. Mosquito-borne diseases are present, so take precautions to avoid mosquito bites, such as using insect repellent, wearing long sleeves and pants, and staying in accommodations with mosquito nets or air conditioning. Tap water is generally considered safe, but bottled water is recommended for those with sensitive stomachs. Medical facilities are limited, particularly on Nevis, so ensure you have adequate health insurance.
