Safety in Saint Lucia

Tips when travelling

Saint Lucia is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Only use licensed taxis and agree the fare in local currency with the driver before you set off.

Do not dress in camouflage clothing as it is illegal for anyone, including children.

Avoid displaying jewellery or valuable items and do not carry large amounts of cash.

Leave valuables and travel documents in your hotel safe or a safety deposit box.

Take care when walking alone off main roads and avoid isolated areas, including beaches, after dark.

Bonus tips:

Currents can be deceptively strong on beaches, so monitor them carefully and obey any local warnings.

If you plan to drive, you will need to get a temporary driving permit, and some hire car companies can obtain this for you.
