Entry requirements for Senegal

What British travellers need to know

You can visit without a visa for up to 3 months.

Your passport must have an expiry date at least 6 months after the date you arrive.

You need to show border officials evidence of return or onward travel and proof of your arranged accommodation.

If you want to stay longer than 3 months, you must register with local authorities after arrival for a Carte d'étranger.

When returning to the UK, British citizens must carry a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement.

Good to know:

You must declare any goods that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty upon entry.

You must have a certificate to prove you've had a yellow fever vaccination if arriving from a country listed as a transmission risk, including transit through its airport.

Safety in Senegal

Tips when travelling

Senegal is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Be alert when withdrawing cash from ATMs and, where possible, go by pre-arranged transport.

Avoid walking alone after nightfall and be particularly careful with your belongings when arriving at and leaving hotels.

Do not kiss romantically in public, as it is considered offensive.

Use a hotel safe to store your passport and valuables whenever possible.

Do not drink alcohol or wear revealing clothes in public during Friday prayers between 1pm and 3pm in the holy month of Ramadan.

Bonus tips:

Pre-arrange your transport from the airport to avoid being overcharged by bogus taxi drivers.

Be cautious when changing cash and use ATMs or reputable exchange bureaux to avoid being scammed with fake money.
