Safety in Singapore
Tips for British travellers
Singapore is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
It is illegal to drink alcohol in a public place, besides licensed venues, between 10:30pm and 7am.
Take care of your passport and leave valuables in a hotel safe as theft, while rare, can occur.
You can be given an on-the-spot fine for littering, and acts of vandalism like graffiti carry severe penalties including fines, imprisonment, and caning.
Vapes and e-cigarettes are banned, so do not bring them into the country as they will be confiscated and you could be fined.
Smoking is banned at all public parks, beaches, along certain waterways, and on Orchard Road, so only smoke in designated areas.
Bonus tips:
Driving under the influence of alcohol carries serious penalties including imprisonment, and police regularly carry out breath tests.
Be aware that online and phone scams are common and may involve individuals pretending to be officials or bank employees.
Driving in Singapore
A valid UK driving license is accepted for short-term visits. An International Driving Permit is recommended.
