Entry requirements for Slovenia
What British travellers need to know
Your passport must have been issued less than 10 years before you arrive and must expire at least 3 months after you plan to leave the Schengen area.
You can travel to Slovenia without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism.
At border control, you may need to show a return ticket and prove you have enough money for your stay.
You must register your presence with the police within 3 days of arrival, though registered hotels will do this for you.
You may need to register your biometric details like fingerprints and a photo at the border as part of the new Entry/Exit System.
Good to know:
Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 10,000 euros or more to avoid them being seized when you leave.
You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into Slovenia, with exceptions for specific items like baby food.
Safety in Slovenia
Tips when travelling
Slovenia is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Always carry a copy of your passport for ID, as you can be fined 50 to 200 euros if asked by police and cannot show it.
Heavy on-the-spot fines apply for not using designated road crossings, and your documents or assets can be confiscated if you cannot pay.
Wild camping is illegal, so only camp in registered campsites or designated camper stops to avoid fines of 40 to 500 euros.
Drink-driving laws are strict, with a blood alcohol limit of 0.05% for experienced drivers and zero tolerance if you are under 21 or have held your licence less than 2 years.
On motorways, you must buy an 'e-vignette' for tolls, available at petrol stations, post offices, or the official online site.
Bonus tips:
In mountain hiking areas, take particular care as bears have been sighted and visitors occasionally encounter them.
If you hear the nationwide emergency siren on any day other than the first Saturday of the month at 12pm, follow instructions from the authorities.
