Safety in Slovenia

Tips for British travellers

Slovenia is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Always carry a copy of your passport as ID, as you can be fined 50 to 200 euros if asked by police and cannot show it.

Do not cross roads except at designated crossing points, as 'jaywalking' can result in a heavy on-the-spot fine.

Wild camping is illegal; only camp in registered campsites or designated camper stops to avoid fines ranging from 40 to 500 euros.

Drink-driving is a serious offence; the blood alcohol limit is 0.05% for experienced drivers, and having any alcohol is illegal if you are under 21 or a new driver.

From 15 November to 15 March, you must have winter tyres on all four wheels or carry snow chains, or you could face a fine of 125 euros.

Bonus tips:

If you drive on motorways, you must purchase an electronic toll 'e-vignette' in advance from official sources like petrol stations or the official DARS website.

If you hire a tour guide, check they are registered by looking for their displayed tour guide card from the Slovenian authorities.
