Entry requirements for Tajikistan

What British travellers need to know

You must have a visa to enter Tajikistan, which you can apply for online as an e-visa or as a pre-approved visa on arrival.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after your arrival date and have at least 2 blank pages.

If you are staying longer than 10 days and did not use an e-visa, you must register with the Office for Registration of Foreign Citizens in Dushanbe.

Do not overstay your visa, as you will need to obtain and pay for an exit visa from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to leave the country.

You may be asked to provide proof of hotel bookings or a formal letter of invitation from a Tajik sponsor to obtain a tourist visa.

Good to know:

You must obtain a separate travel permit in addition to your visa to visit the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region or certain border areas in the Khatlon Region.

You can bring up to $10,000 in cash into Tajikistan without declaring it, but you must declare any amount exceeding this limit.

Safety in Tajikistan

Tips when travelling

Tajikistan is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Carry your passport or a notarised copy with you at all times as police can arrest you for not having ID.

Pickpocketing is common in crowded places like markets and on public transport, so keep valuables out of sight.

Do not leave drinks unattended or accept drinks from strangers due to the risk of drink spiking and assault.

Avoid using unofficial taxis, especially at night, and consider pre-arranged taxis or private cars.

Smoking on the street is illegal and can result in a fine.

Bonus tips:

The legal age for purchasing alcohol is 18, and appearing drunk in public can lead to a fine or overnight detention.

It is illegal to take photos or use drones near military sites, border checkpoints, or police stations.

Health in Tajikistan

Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, including emergency evacuation. Check that your policy covers the activities you plan to undertake, such as trekking or climbing. It's also a good idea to carry a copy of your insurance policy with you.

No vaccinations required

Consult your doctor well in advance of your trip to discuss necessary vaccinations and health precautions. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Avoid ice in drinks. Be cautious with food from street vendors. The altitude in Tajikistan can affect you, especially in the Pamir Mountains. Acclimatise gradually and drink plenty of fluids. Medical facilities are limited, especially outside of Dushanbe.
