Entry requirements for Tajikistan

What British travellers need to know

You must have a visa to enter Tajikistan and can apply online for an e-visa before you travel.

Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months after you arrive and have at least 2 blank pages.

Do not overstay your visa, especially a Tourist Visa, as it cannot be extended and you will need to apply and pay for an exit visa to leave.

If you are staying longer than 10 days without an e-visa, you must register with the Office for Registration of Foreign Citizens in Dushanbe.

You must get a separate travel permit, in addition to your visa, to visit the Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Region or certain areas near the Afghan border in Khatlon Region.

Good to know:

If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, you must show a medical certificate proving you are HIV-free.

You may bring up to $10,000 in cash without declaring it, but must declare larger amounts and keep your entry declaration form until departure.

Safety in Tajikistan

Tips when travelling

Tajikistan is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Carry your passport or a notarised copy at all times as you can be arrested without it.

Be aware of pickpocketing and petty crime in crowded places like markets and on public transport.

Do not leave drinks unattended or accept drinks from strangers due to risks of drink spiking.

Smoking on the street is illegal and can result in a fine.

Avoid using unofficial taxis, especially at night, and consider using pre-arranged vehicles.

Bonus tips:

Tajikistan is mainly cash-only, so bring enough foreign currency for your stay or use ATMs in larger towns.

Appearing drunk in public can lead to police detaining you overnight or issuing a fine.

Make sure you have comprehensive travel insurance that covers medical expenses, including emergency evacuation. Check that your policy covers the activities you plan to undertake, such as trekking or climbing. It's also a good idea to carry a copy of your insurance policy with you.

No vaccinations required

Consult your doctor well in advance of your trip to discuss necessary vaccinations and health precautions. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Avoid ice in drinks. Be cautious with food from street vendors. The altitude in Tajikistan can affect you, especially in the Pamir Mountains. Acclimatise gradually and drink plenty of fluids. Medical facilities are limited, especially outside of Dushanbe.
