Entry requirements for U.S. Virgin Islands

What British travellers need to know

You must have a valid US visa or approved ESTA before you travel, depending on your personal circumstances.

Your passport must be valid for the length of your planned stay in the US.

If you have been arrested, have a criminal record, or have overstayed an ESTA before, you may not be eligible for an ESTA and must apply for a visa.

All travellers, including children, must have a valid visa or ESTA on arrival and be able to provide evidence about their visit if asked.

You cannot apply for an ESTA if you have been in Cuba on or after 12 January 2021, or in certain other listed countries on or after March 2011.

Good to know:

Anyone aged 17 and under travelling alone or with only one parent should carry a notarised letter of consent.

You must declare any goods that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty upon entry.

Tips when travelling

U.S. Virgin Islands is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Always carry your passport as you need to show you have permission to enter or remain in the US.

The legal age for buying and drinking alcohol is 21 across the entire United States.

Illegal drugs, including cannabis, carry severe penalties including long jail sentences and heavy fines for possession, use, or smuggling.

Do not leave your passport in a rental car, especially in the boot, as gangs may target tourist vehicles.

When travelling by car, avoid sleeping in your vehicle by the road or in rest areas.

Bonus tips:

You can use a UK photocard driving licence to drive in the US, but check if the state you are visiting also requires a 1949 version International Driving Permit.

Petrol stations that do not display fuel prices are often near tourist areas and airports and usually charge considerably more than the national average.
