Entry requirements for Hungary
Your passport's date of issue must be less than 10 years old when you arrive.
Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area.
You can stay in Hungary without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period as a tourist.
Be prepared to show a return ticket and proof of enough money for your stay at border control.
Allow extra time at the border for new biometric registration, which is required on entry to the Schengen area.
Good to know:
You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into Hungary, with limited exceptions.
You must declare cash or travellers cheques if the total value is 10,000 euros or more upon entry.
Safety in Hungary
Hungary is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:
Watch out for bag-snatching and pickpocketing on public transport, at stations, markets, and tourist areas.
Always carry your passport as the police require original ID, not a copy.
Check menus for displayed prices and scrutinise bills before paying to avoid scams at bars and restaurants.
Use ATMs inside banks if possible and keep your card in sight when paying in shops and restaurants.
Buy your own drinks and keep sight of them in bars, as there have been reports of drinks being spiked.

Be cautious if a taxi driver recommends a specific bar or club, as they may be part of a fraud.
Remember to validate your public transport ticket at the station or immediately after boarding, and keep it until your journey ends to avoid fines.

Health in Hungary
As a UK resident, your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) or Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) will be accepted in Hungary, giving you access to state-provided healthcare at a reduced cost or sometimes for free. However, it is still advisable to obtain comprehensive travel insurance to cover costs that the EHIC/GHIC may not, such as repatriation or private healthcare.
