Entry requirements for Turkey

Your passport must be valid for at least 150 days after you arrive and have at least one blank page.

You can visit Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for business or tourism.

Ensure border officials stamp and date your passport if you enter at a land border.

If you hold a British passport that is not a 'British citizen' passport, you will need a visa.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or use a reported lost or stolen passport.

Good to know:

If leaving Turkey with a dual British-Turkish national child aged 18 or younger, you may need permission from the Turkish parent.

You must declare to customs any currency worth more than 5000 US dollars when taking it out of Turkey.

Safety in Turkey

Turkey is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Carry your passport or residence permit because authorities may conduct ID checks.

Buy your own drinks, keep them in sight and refuse food or drinks from strangers.

Avoid illegally produced or counterfeit alcohol, which may contain deadly methanol.

Use registered or pre-booked taxis, note the registration number and check the meter.

Follow beach flags and lifeguard instructions, supervise children and never dive into unknown water.

Bonus tips:

Keep belongings secure in Istanbul’s major tourist areas, where pickpocketing is common.

Do not approach stray dogs, and seek medical advice immediately if you are bitten.

No vaccinations required

Check with your GP or a travel clinic for the latest recommendations. Tap water may not be safe to drink; bottled water is widely available. Food hygiene standards can vary, so choose reputable places to eat. Protect yourself from mosquito bites, especially in warmer months. Seek medical attention if you feel unwell.

Recent updates

Safety

The US and Iran announced a memorandum of understanding on 17 June, but since 8 July there have been retaliatory attacks by Iran against US military and civilian infrastructure across the region.

There is a risk of more attacks and unforeseen escalation in the region.

Travelers should be prepared for possible flight cancellations, periodic airspace closures, and potential travel disruptions, and monitor updates relating to airports which could close at short notice.

Do not approach or touch any drone or missile fragments or unusual objects.

The entire section on travel disruption for the NATO Summit in Ankara from 7-8 July has been removed.

Specific road closures, public transport impacts, and airspace restrictions around Ankara Esenboga Airport are no longer listed.

Advisory details for travellers to arrive early and expect enhanced security screening at airports have been removed.

Local Laws

Same-sex relationships are not legally recognised in Turkey.

Authorities have banned or dispersed Pride events since 2015; public displays of affection may attract unwanted attention.

Restrictions on LGBT+ organisations have increased, with operations against organisations and activists across the country.

Insulting the President or Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Turkish Republic, is also a criminal offence, including in online comments or images posted from outside Turkey.
