Vientiane is the capital of Laos, with a population of 693,594. It sits in central Laos on the Mekong, close to the country’s border with Thailand, and serves as the country’s main political and administrative centre.
Most international visitors arrive through Wattay International Airport (VTE), which serves the city. Vientiane is inland, and there are no notable beaches within 40 kilometres, so it is better suited to city sightseeing and exploring the surrounding region than to a beach holiday.
