Entry requirements for Norway

Your passport must have a date of issue less than 10 years old and an expiry date at least 3 months after you plan to leave the Schengen area.

You can stay in Norway without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period for tourism or visiting.

At border control, you may need to show a hotel booking, proof of travel insurance, a return ticket, and proof of sufficient funds for your stay.

Be prepared for possible biometric registration (fingerprints or photo) at the border under the new Schengen Entry/Exit System (EES), which may take extra time.

Ensure your whole visit to all Schengen countries stays within the 90-day limit, as visits in the previous 180 days count towards it.

Good to know:

You must declare cash or travellers cheques if the total value is 25,000 Norwegian krone or more on entry.

You cannot take meat, milk, or products containing them into Norway without special permission, with limited exceptions.

Safety in Norway

Norway is tourist-friendly but has some key cultural and legal rules:

Be aware of the risk of petty theft, particularly at airports and railway stations in and around Oslo.

Possessing, using or smuggling illegal drugs, including cannabis, carries severe penalties including long jail sentences and heavy fines.

To fly a drone, you need to be registered as an operator in Norway or an EU/EFTA country and have liability insurance.

Drink-driving is a serious offence, and you may be fined or imprisoned if found with a quarter of England's legal limit of alcohol in your system.

Police enforce bans on campfires in many hiking and outdoor areas during the summer months.

Bonus tips:

You can use a UK photocard driving licence to drive in Norway for up to 90 days, but if you have a paper licence you may need to update it or get an international driving permit.

On roads not marked with a priority sign, you must give way to traffic coming from the right.

Health in Norway

As a UK resident, ensure you have a valid Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) or European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) for state healthcare. However, these may not cover all costs, so comprehensive travel insurance is still recommended, especially for repatriation, private healthcare, and activities like winter sports.

No vaccinations required

Norway generally has high standards of public health. No specific vaccinations are required for entry. Tap water is safe to drink throughout the country. Be aware of tick-borne diseases in forested areas during summer; consider using insect repellent and checking for ticks regularly.

Entry Requirements

Allow extra time to reach your departure gate when flying out of the Schengen area as EES checks may happen before boarding.

You can now request a correction of your EES record from border officials if you believe your time spent in the Schengen area has been recorded incorrectly.
