The best time to visit the Bahamas is December to April, and unlike most Caribbean destinations, the Bahamas gives you a real reason beyond prices to think hard about the calendar: it sits further north than you probably imagine, level with southern Florida, so winter here is genuinely mild rather than tropical-hot, and the sea itself has seasons.

Best time to visit: the short version

• Best overall: December to April. Dry, sunny, 24C to 28C days, and the reliable season the resort prices reflect.
• Best value with good odds: late April to early June, and November. Warmer sea than mid-winter, thinner crowds, softer rates.
• Cheapest, riskiest: August to October. The heart of hurricane season, and the Bahamas' northern position puts it more in harm's way than the southern Caribbean.

The Bahamas has actual seasons

• Winter (December to February): glorious sunny days around 25C, but cold fronts off the US occasionally drop nights below 20C and stir the sea. Ocean temperatures dip to about 24C: refreshing rather than bath-warm. Pack one light layer for evenings.
• Spring (March to May): the sweet spot: warming sea, settled weather, and (in March) US spring-break crowds around Nassau and Paradise Island worth knowing about before booking a quiet couples' escape.
• Summer (June to August): hot (low 30s), humid, with afternoon thunderstorms and the warmest, calmest water: about 29C. Family season, and out-island trips shine, weather-watching duly noted.
• Autumn (September to November): September and October are the statistical peak of hurricane risk and the emptiest, cheapest months; November tips back toward lovely as fronts and storms both fade.

Hurricane season, taken seriously

June to November, peaking August to October. The Bahamas' geography (700 low-lying islands spread across the Atlantic's storm corridor) means the risk is not theoretical: recent history includes direct major-hurricane hits.

That does not close the islands for half the year; it sets the rules for visiting during it:

• Insurance that names hurricanes, rates you can move, and a watch on the National Hurricane Center from August onward.
• September and October bargains are real, and so is the chance of a rearranged week. Book accordingly.

• Swimming and snorkelling: late April to July for warm, calm, clear water. Mid-winter swimming is fine for the brave; locals wait for spring.
