Best Time to Visit Bora Bora

Bora Bora runs on the opposite calendar to the Caribbean, and that catches people constantly. The best time to visit Bora Bora is May to October, the South Pacific dry season, which is precisely when Caribbean planning is fretting about hurricanes.
Get that one fact right and the rest is fine-tuning between perfect-and-expensive and humid-and-cheaper. Given what a Bora Bora trip costs, the fine-tuning is worth ten minutes of your time.

Best time to visit: the short version
- Best weather: May to October (the austral winter): dry, 27C to 29C days, low humidity, the lagoon at its clearest.
- Best value with good weather: May and October themselves, the shoulder ends of the dry season, before and after the June-to-August peak.
- Wet season: November to April. Hotter, stickier, with heavy showers and the (modest) South Pacific cyclone season; also when the deals appear.
The two seasons, honestly
May to October: the dry season
Trade winds keep the air comfortable, rain is occasional rather than structural, and the lagoon's visibility (the entire point of Bora Bora) peaks. July and August add Heiva, French Polynesia's month-long festival of dance and sport, plus the year's biggest crowds and prices: overwater bungalows at the famous resorts book out months ahead, honeymoon season compounding school holidays.
The one quirk: the maraamu, the southern trade wind, can blow hard for stretches of June to August: cooler evenings and chop on the lagoon's southern edges. Photographers and drone-flyers prefer the stiller ends of the season.
November to April: the wet season
Hot (31C-plus), humid, with dramatic downpours between sunny spells, and the cyclone season, which in French Polynesia is real but far less active than the Caribbean's hurricane conveyor. December and January are the wettest core; November and April are transition months that often behave like the dry season at a discount, which makes them the savvy budget pick.
Wet-season upsides are genuine: waterfalls on the high islands, greener slopes on Otemanu, honeymoon rates 30-plus per cent down, and the lagoon still at 28C to 29C. It is a gamble with good odds, not a write-off.

Best time for specific plans
- Honeymoons: May, June, September, or October: dry-season lagoon, marginally saner prices, and space at the resorts that make the postcards.
- Snorkelling and diving: the dry season for visibility; manta and reef-shark encounters run all year in the lagoon and passes.
- Whale watching: humpbacks migrate through French Polynesia roughly July to November: the dry season's second half doubles up nicely.
- Photography: April-May and September-October: clear air, softer winds, greener island.
- Budget trips (relatively speaking): November or April, with a flexible eye on forecasts.
Getting there changes the calculus
- Everyone routes via Tahiti (Papeete), then a 50-minute inter-island hop to Bora Bora's motu airport and a boat transfer. From the UK it is a genuinely long haul (via the US West Coast or Paris); from LA, about eight hours to Papeete.
- That journey argues for ten days-plus and often a two-island itinerary (Moorea plus Bora Bora is the classic). Once flights cost this much, shoulder-season hotel savings fund the second island.
- French Polynesia is visa-free for normal holiday stays for UK, EU, and US passports; the currency is the CFP franc, pegged to the euro.
Cheapest and busiest times
- Busiest and priciest: June to August, then the Christmas-New Year spike inside the wet season.
- Cheapest: the wet-season core (late January to March), then November and April for the better-odds version of the discount.
- Booking lead time: the marquee overwater resorts fill six to twelve months out for dry-season dates. This is not a last-minute island.
Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to visit Bora Bora?
May to October for the dry season; May and October specifically for the best weather-to-price ratio. November and April are the value gambles that usually pay off.
When is the rainy season in Bora Bora?
November to April, wettest from December to March, coinciding with the South Pacific cyclone season: less ferocious than the Caribbean's, but real enough for insurance and flexible rates.
Where is Bora Bora, and what country is it in?
In French Polynesia, a French overseas collectivity in the South Pacific, about 160 miles north-west of Tahiti: roughly halfway between California and Australia, and a hemisphere away from the Caribbean it gets shortlisted against.
Is Bora Bora worth it in the wet season?
For a big saving on a bucket-list resort, often yes: mornings frequently shine, the lagoon stays warm, and showers are heavy but short. For a once-only honeymoon with zero flexibility, pay for the dry season.
How does Bora Bora compare with the Caribbean?
Opposite seasons, longer flights, higher prices, and arguably the world's most beautiful lagoon at the end of them. If the Caribbean is the sensible shortlist, our best islands and honeymoon rankings are the counter-offer at half the airfare.
If the lagoon wins (it usually does), tell Atlas your dates and budget and it will price the long-haul flights, the island hop, and the stay together, including the two-island version via Bora Bora. For the regional alternatives on the closer ocean, the Caribbean timing guide is the other tab to keep open.
