The case for St. Thomas
Convenience and headline beaches. You fly straight in, the hotel choice is wide, Magens Bay and the east-end coves are world-class, and the St. John ferry puts a national park 20 minutes away.
Duty-free shopping, harbour views, and day-sails fill any gaps. The price is company: cruise ships most days, per-person taxis, and the busiest beaches in the territory.

The case for St. Croix
Space and substance.
St. Croix is twice the size of St. Thomas with a fraction of the foot traffic, two characterful towns (Danish-built Christiansted and sunset-facing Frederiksted), the Cruzan rum distillery, and the territory's best underwater life: Buck Island Reef National Monument, the Cane Bay wall, and a pier full of seahorses, all covered in our St. Croix snorkelling guide.
Evenings are boardwalk dinners rather than resort shows. The price is connectivity: fewer direct flights, and no St. John ferry.

- First-time visitors: St. Thomas. The logistics are easier and the greatest-hits density is higher.
- Families: St. Thomas for calm managed beaches and Coral World; St. Croix for older kids who snorkel.
- Snorkellers and divers: St. Croix, clearly.
- Couples: St. Croix's quiet and restaurant scene edge it, unless the honeymoon wants a big resort, which St. Thomas does better.
- Budget: St. Croix, modestly. Rooms and meals run a little lower, and the best activities are cheap or free.
- A week with everything: split it. The seaplane and island-hopper flights between them take about 25 minutes and turn one trip into two islands.
