Is Saint Lucia expensive? Compared with the Mediterranean, yes.
Compared with the priciest Caribbean islands, not especially. The honest answer is that Saint Lucia runs from backpacker-manageable to eye-watering depending on which coast you sleep on and which month you pick, and the difference between a careful week and a careless one is easily a four-figure sum.

A rough budget for two people sharing, seven nights, mid-range, travelling from the UK outside the Christmas peak:

Call it £3,500 to £5,000 all-in for a comfortable week for two. An all-inclusive package can come in under that in the wet season and far over it at Christmas.

Budget levels per day
Per person, per day, excluding flights:
- Budget: about US$100 to US$150. Guesthouses or self-catering apartments around Gros Islet or Castries, minibus routes, supermarket lunches, street food at the Friday fish fries, free days on public beaches like Reduit and Vigie.
- Mid-range: about US$200 to US$350. A three or four-star hotel in Rodney Bay or a small Soufrière property, restaurant dinners, licensed taxis, the headline activities paid for without wincing.
- Luxury: US$500 and up, without a visible ceiling. Jade Mountain, Sugar Beach, and the west-coast resorts price like the view they sell. A Piton-facing suite can pass US$1,500 a night in high season.
What the big costs actually are
Three costs decide the whole trip:
- The room. Saint Lucia's hotel stock leans upmarket, and the December-to-April high season adds 30 to 60 per cent to most rates. The same Rodney Bay room can be half price in September. Timing beats haggling.
- Getting around. Hewanorra Airport is in the far south; Rodney Bay is in the far north. The 90-minute private transfer is around US$90 to US$100 each way for a car. Taxis are unmetered, priced by route, and add up fast. The local minibuses are cheap (a few XCD per hop) if your schedule can flex.
- Imported everything. Restaurant mains in tourist areas run US$20 to US$40, and a cocktail US$10 to US$15, because most ingredients arrive by ship. Local food, local rum, and local Piton beer are the well-priced exceptions.
Ways to save money
- Travel in May, June, or November. Shoulder-season rooms are the single biggest saving on the island, and the weather is still mostly on your side.
- Eat where the island eats. The Castries market, roadside rotis, and the Anse La Raye and Gros Islet Friday fish fries feed you properly for a fraction of resort prices. Our things to do in Saint Lucia list covers both fish fries.
- Pick one base near the things you care about. Staying north and day-tripping south (or the reverse) burns money on the winding west-coast road. Split the week between two bases instead.
- Use the beaches. Every beach is public to the high-water mark, and Reduit needs no ticket, no boat, and no day pass.
- Book the Gros Piton guide (about US$50) and Sulphur Springs (about US$15) directly rather than through hotel excursion desks, which add margin.
- Drink the local Chairman's Reserve and Piton, not imported labels. The bar bill drops by half.
Hidden costs to consider
- Service charge and tax add roughly 20 per cent to most hotel and restaurant bills. Check whether menu prices include them before you order.
- Resort day passes for non-guests, water-taxi fares to the famous coves, and chair rentals on hotel-lined beaches are all real line items.
- A temporary local driving permit is required to hire a car, on top of the rental.
- Roaming is expensive from a UK phone. An eSIM sorted before you fly is far cheaper.
- Hurricane-season bargains are only bargains with travel insurance behind them. Price the policy into the trip, not as an afterthought.
A sample budget week for two
To make it concrete, a wet-season week done carefully:
- Flights: £1,150 return from London in June.
- Guesthouse near Gros Islet, 7 nights: US$700.
- Food: US$450, mixing self-catering, local spots, and two proper dinners.
- Transport: US$250, shared airport shuttle plus minibuses and two taxis.
- Activities: US$220, Gros Piton for two plus the volcano and mud baths.
- Total on the ground: about US$1,620, or roughly £115 per person per day before flights.

Is Saint Lucia expensive?
Mid-to-high for the Caribbean. Cheaper than St Barts, Anguilla, or the British Virgin Islands, pricier than the Dominican Republic or Jamaica on a like-for-like room.
The season you pick moves the bill more than the island does.
Is Saint Lucia all-inclusive good value?
Often, yes, especially for a first visit in high season, because food and drink prices outside the gates are high. The trade-off is that the best of the island (Soufrière, the fish fries, the market) happens outside the wristband. Budget at least two escape days.
How much cash should I bring?
Cards work at hotels and most restaurants. Carry Eastern Caribbean dollars (XCD, pegged at 2.70 to the US dollar) for minibuses, market stalls, beach vendors, and the fish fries.
US dollars are widely accepted, but change comes back in XCD.
What is the cheapest month to visit Saint Lucia?

Is food expensive in Saint Lucia?
Resort and tourist-strip food, yes. Local food, no.
