The case for Saint Lucia
Saint Lucia is the looker. The Pitons rise straight out of the sea, the interior is genuine rainforest, and no beach bar in Barbados can match sitting between two volcanic spires at Sugar Beach.
If your picture of the Caribbean involves green mountains behind the sand, only one of these islands delivers it.
Its weaknesses are practical. The road network is slow and winding, the main airport is 90 minutes from the northern resorts, and the famous south-west coves take a water taxi or a steep road to reach.

The case for Barbados
Barbados is the easy one. One airport, shorter transfers, calm west-coast water, and the best eating and drinking scene in the eastern Caribbean, from rum-shop fish cutters to genuinely fine dining.
The south coast (Worthing, Oistins, Miami Beach) does affordable beach holidays well, the west coast does glamour, and the wild Atlantic east at Bathsheba is a beautiful afternoon even though you will not swim there.
It also simply works: buses go everywhere, the island is flat enough to explore casually, and the Friday night Oistins fish fry is the biggest, most organised version of the Caribbean fish-fry ritual. What it lacks is drama.
There is no Piton moment, no rainforest gorge, and the scenery peaks at lovely rather than jaw-dropping.
