The Perfect 7-Day Trip to Saint Lucia

Seven days is the right length for Saint Lucia. Long enough to do both coasts properly, short enough that every day earns its place.

This itinerary splits the week between Soufrière's drama and Rodney Bay's ease, uses a boat for the coast-to-coast move instead of the winding road, and leaves slack for the day when you simply refuse to leave the beach.

Trip overview

Length: 7 nights. Fly into Hewanorra (UVF) in the south.
Bases: 3 nights near Soufrière, then 4 nights in Rodney Bay.
Style: a mix of hiking, snorkelling, and unapologetic beach time.
Budget: roughly US$2,500 to US$4,500 for two on the ground, mid-range, before flights. The maths is broken down in our budget guide.

Day 1 - Land south, sleep in Soufrière

UVF to Soufrière is only 45 minutes to an hour, which is why we start the week here rather than crossing the whole island on arrival day. Check in, walk the waterfront, and have a first Piton beer where you can see the actual Pitons. Early night. Tomorrow is the hard day.

Day 2 - Gros Piton, then the mud bath

Morning: hike Gros Piton from Fond Gens Libre with the required local guide (about US$50). Start by 7am, carry more water than feels reasonable, and take the summit photos before the haze builds.
Afternoon: reward yourself at Sulphur Springs. The drive-in volcano tour plus mud bath is about US$15, the smell is included free, and your hiking aches will not survive the warm pools.
Evening: dinner in Soufrière and the earliest night of the trip.

Day 3 - Anse Chastanet's reef and Diamond Falls

Morning: water taxi to Anse Chastanet and snorkel the reef that starts a few fin-kicks off the sand. It is the island's entry in our Caribbean snorkelling list, and mornings beat the afternoon chop. Walk or hop the boat to quieter Anse Mamin next door for the second swim.
Afternoon: Diamond Falls Botanical Gardens and the mineral baths, a gentle counterweight to yesterday.
Evening: if it is Friday, the Anse La Raye fish fry is 30 minutes up the coast. If not, it will be waiting later in the week from the north.

Day 4 - Sail north instead of driving

Move bases by water. A water taxi or day-sail from Soufrière up to Rodney Bay turns a carsick 90-minute road transfer into the best hour of sightseeing on the island, with the Pitons shrinking behind you and Marigot Bay's hidden harbour on the way.

Ask the boat to pause there, or stop properly for a slow lunch over the yachts.

Check in at Rodney Bay, then do precisely nothing on Reduit Beach until sunset.

Day 5 - Pigeon Island and Reduit

Morning: Pigeon Island National Landmark (US$10). Climb to Fort Rodney for the view back down the whole north coast, then swim off the small park beaches.
Afternoon: Reduit Beach proper, the easiest swimming on the island and first in our top 5 beaches for a reason. Watersports desks are on the sand if lying still fails you.
Evening: Rodney Bay's restaurant strip. Book the popular spots in high season.

Day 6 - The flexible day

Hold this one open and spend it on whichever of these the week has earned:

The rainforest: aerial tram and zip lines at Chassin, about 45 minutes inland. Book the morning slot.
A proper catamaran day-sail with snorkel stops, if the day-4 crossing left you wanting more boat.
Castries on a Saturday: the market at full strength, Derek Walcott Square, and the Morne Fortune viewpoint.
Absolutely nothing, on the sand, again. This is also correct.

If it is Friday, end at the Gros Islet street party, a few minutes from Rodney Bay: grilled fish, rum, speakers, and half the north coast in the road.

Day 7 - Slow morning, long transfer

One last Reduit swim, then build in the 90 minutes back to UVF plus airport time. Book the transfer the day before rather than gambling on a passing taxi.

If your flight is late, several hotels will hold luggage while you squeeze out a final lunch.

Optional swaps

Reverse the whole route (north first) if your arrival flight lands late: recovery day at Reduit before the Gros Piton effort.
Swap Gros Piton for the Tet Paul Nature Trail (US$10, under an hour) if the group's knees vote no. Same Pitons view, fraction of the sweat.
Swap Diamond Falls for the Fond Doux cocoa estate if you would rather learn chocolate than botany.

Travel tips for this route

Do the south first. Gros Piton wants your freshest legs, and ending the week on easy beach days sends you home relaxed rather than exhausted.
Agree every taxi and water-taxi fare before boarding, in the currency you intend to pay.

Should I stay in Soufrière or Rodney Bay?

For a first trip, both, in that order. Soufrière owns the scenery, Rodney Bay owns the easy evenings. Choosing only one means choosing what to miss.

Do I need to hire a car for this itinerary?

No. It is deliberately built on transfers, minibuses, and boats. A car adds freedom on day 6 at the cost of the permit, the left-hand driving, and the west-coast road.

What should I book before arriving?

The airport transfer, the Gros Piton guide, and any high-season catamaran or big-name restaurant. Everything else books happily a day ahead on the island.
