Travel disruption

• The 'Travel disruption' sub-section containing information on flight operations and consular assistance has been removed.

• The advice on flooding in Oman, including warnings about road closures and restrictions, has been removed.

Safety

• A new curfew will be in effect from 3 May to 18 May, between 11pm and 5am.
• The curfew applies in the provinces under the existing state of emergency.

• There are now increased reports of drink spiking and credit card fraud in nightlife areas. The amount stolen ranges from hundreds to tens of thousands of pounds.
• Most British victims of these crimes have reported being targeted by 'kyakuhiki' street touts in Tokyo's Kabukicho district. Do not follow street touts into bars.

Laws and cultural differences

• Child custody law has been updated: parents in Japan can now choose joint custody after divorce, or one parent can hold sole custody.

• A warning for Nayarit state has been added, following arson attacks and roadblocks in the north on 27 April.
• You may need to shelter in place in some municipalities, including Tecuala and Acaponeta.

• Kuwait airspace has now reopened.
• A limited range of flights has restarted from Kuwait International Airport.

• Advice for residents denied an exit permit by an employer/sponsor has changed: they can appeal to the Public Authority of Manpower, but should now 'seek legal support' and can find English-speaking lawyers in Kuwait for further assistance.
• The instruction to contact the British Embassy if no response from the Public Authority of Manpower within 24 hours has been removed.

• A new warning about explosive attacks in Cauca, Valle de Cauca and Nariño departments has been added.
• The attacks occurred between 24-27 April, causing deaths, injuries and damage, including on the Pan-American Highway.

Regional risks

• The entire section about a magnitude 7.7 earthquake in northern Japan on 20 April 2026 and the related megaquake alert has been removed.
• The specific warning for residents and tourists in Hokkaido, Aomori, Iwate, Miyagi, Fukushima, Ibaraki and Chiba to remain vigilant is no longer present.

Entry/Exit System (EES)

• You can now use the optional 'Travel to Europe' mobile app to complete an entry questionnaire before travel to speed up border checks.

Travel disruption

• New specific guidance added for the Eurovision 2026 event in Vienna from 10-17 May 2026.
• Tickets for all Eurovision 2026 events are now digital only and must be presented on a mobile phone with valid photo ID.

• The security operation and risk status for Laikipia, Meru, and Isiolo counties has been merged with the existing advice for Turkana, West Pokot, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Baringo, and Samburu.
• The specific 30-day timeline for the security operation in Laikipia, Meru, and Isiolo has been removed. It’s now described as a continuing operation.
